Non Executive Directors

It's surprising how few smaller businesses take full advantage of the benefits of an independent non-executive director. It's also a pity because non-executive directors along with other external advisers can help transform a business. In fact, working alongside our clients over long periods of time, as we do, means that we often evolve into this role. We may even act as non-executive chairmen and have done this many times before.

A non exec director brings a lot of the benefits we do: objectivity; expertise and experience; personal skills; and they are often excellent sounding boards for you at the top of your company. Being in charge can be a lonely role.

We tend to work as a "non-exec plus". Having a non exec director that just turns up to a few board meetings a year won't help you much. You need someone who is prepared to be more hands on, someone like Management Insights who are prepared to work alongside you each step of the way.

Good independent non exec directors are hard to find. That's one of the reasons we start to work with people by carrying out a Structured Business Review. It's low risk, so we can demonstrate the value we have to offer. This often leads to other longer term work with a company and in time to us taking on non-executive director roles. We like to build business relationships over time, a bit like we all build our personal ones.

If you are thinking about looking for an independent non-executive director, why not consider our approach first. It's low risk to you and many people, just like you, have benefited greatly already. Perhaps it's now your turn.
